September 22, 1990 - 2025: 35 years of: Clash Of The Titans, Europe.

Thrashmetal's swansong, Part I.

A new decade is upon us. Almost on top of the world, yet still way behind hardrock, it was now time for thrashmetal to taste the arenas. Moshing Europe into a pulp, this pit was a brutal session.

Co-headlining and leading the way with their pristine metal, SLAYER and MEGADETH presented material from their soon-to-be released Seasons In The Abyss and Rust In Peace CDs, respectively. Tagging along Bay-Area heavyweights TESTAMENT and the cool L.A. punks of SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, this caravan is the one-stop shop. This breed of thrash was on top and finally getting some commercial appeal. A fine collection, setting high hopes for the 90s.

Another type of war.

While the Persian Gulf was under attack, Western Europe metalheads got the full assault. The second air-strike, on the American front in Spring 1991, featuring an odd-ball guest ...shall inadvertently close the lid on thrashmetal's dominance. All of this mosh-madness, mere months before the ultimate gamechanger: METALLICA's black Godzilla.

The second assault: Alice in wonderland.

Round Two of an historic event. Now crisscrossing the USA, after leaving Europe in rubles in Autumn 1990, this masterclass in metal-mosh opened the gates to a to-be fucked-up decade. Three top thrash-players, packaged under one roof for a whopping $20USD.

A rotating headline featuring: MEGADETH, SLAYER and ANTHRAX ...the troops were finally back home. Riding high with their current killings, thrashmetal was now at it's peak. Although, most veterans already knew the writing was on the wall, yet this live-experience was a fun head-banging tour.

A changing of the guards.

Initially intended for DEATH ANGEL, they refused the opening-spot after the band was involved in a bus-accident, leaving them drummer-less. Both SEPULTURA and EXODUS were in line, but the coveted spot was eventually filled by ALICE IN CHAINS. The young Seattle band embraced the chance to step-up, yet the hardcore fans rapidly reminded them that this rabid trek is a thrashmetal venture. Irony at its very best as mere months later, the same ALICE IN CHAINS would become RIAA-certified Platinum-sellers, leaders of the grunge-scene and dominate the decade …while most thrash bands would barely fill local-clubs.

1990-91's Clash Of The Titans gathering: a proud exhibition among the living for a genre, that lurked under the mainstream eye. There would not be a Clash Of The Titans III, as thrashmetal was trashed by it's very own creators: METALLICA ...on Monday August 12, 1991 at 00:00AM.
