October 30, 1990 - 2020: 30 years of: At Death's Door.

Welcome to Hell.

30 years ago, this compilation-cassette landed in my hands, forever opening The Gates. While speedmetal was the fastest sound on Earth, deathmetal was it for the land from beyond. Issued by Roadrunner Records and featuring most of their then roster, this release displays most of the cream of the crop.

Already a fan of SEPULTURA, OBITUARY and DEATH, this collection introduced myself and many other future fans of extremes to: Florida's DEICIDE, Germany's MORGOTH and the Dutch devils of PESTILENCE. One specific band that caught my interest was Louisiana's own death-mosh merchant EXHORDER. The sound, the feel and the relentless fuck-you attitude still brings me joy to this very day.

Scene-wise, many, many, many key-bands are missing in action, most likely do to record-label politics. The glorious Earache Records catalog: MORBID ANGEL, NOCTURNUS, CARCASS, ENTOMBED, TERRORIZER and the Gods of grind themselves NAPALM DEATH ...as well as Nuclear Blast Records's BENEDICTION.

Typically not a fan of compilations, I'm glad this one got to my stereo in the fall of 1990 ...been a fan since. Roadrunner Records would strike again with a Volume II in 1993, but it was way too late at that point, as the scene had already shape-shifted into street-metal and alternative-rock.
